Kojima Productions and Sony recently announced that Death Stranding 2 is in development for PS5, but that’s not the only thing that fans of the IP have to look forward to. A movie adaptation of the open world title is also in the works, it’s been officially confirmed (via Deadline).

Development on the film is underway, and the project is said to be “on the fast track”. It’s being co-produced by Hideo Kojima through the Kojima Productions banner and by Alex Lebovici (executive producer on Barbarian) through the Hammerstone Studios banner. Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar will serve as executive producers, with the film being fully financed by Hammerstone.

It’s been confirmed that the film will feature new characters and plot elements that weren’t present in the game, though there’s no official word yet on who will be writing or directing it.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Kojima. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing Death Stranding to the big screen.”

“We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation,” said Lebovici. “Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo Kojima’ production.”

Details on casting are currently scant as well. The game, of course, has a star-studded cast featuring a number of Hollywood names, including Norman Reedus, Lea Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Lindsay Wagner, Guillermo del Toro, Tommie Earl Jenkins, and Margaret Qualley. Whether any of them will reprise their roles in the movie remains to be seen.

Death Stranding is available on PS5, PS4, and PC. It was recently confirmed that the game has seen over 10 million players since launch.
