Dreams – Remuneration For Creators Is “A No-Brainer Ambition,” Says Media Molecule

"It’s absolutely something that we want to explore but nothing that we have any update on for now," says the developer.

Media Molecule’s Dreams is taking the user generated content-centric approach the developer has taken to its games in the past to a whole new level, providing a vast and extensive creation toolset that can be used to create any number of things. Of course, one of the interesting things this has led to is the question of whether or not creators using Dreams’ tools to make things would ever be able to monetize their content.

Media Molecule have spoken about the very same in the past, saying that though it’s something they’d love to do, there are various other things that they’d have to consider, most of which would have to happen on Sony’s side of things. Recently, while speaking with MCVUK, the developers got to speaking of the topic once again, and Media Molecule creative director and co-founder Mark Healey was similarly enthusiastic about the whole concept.

“We definitely want to be able to reward creators somehow,” said Healey. “We’re just looking into the different ways that we can possibly do that and at the same time preserve the sort of delicate nature of wanting to keep the community very sharey and collaborative.

“So it’s something we want to do, for me that’s just a no-brainer ambition, but we’ve just got to do it right.”

Communications manager Abbie Heppe echoed Healey’s statements, saying that though monetization is something Media Molecule is hoping to eventually get to, it isn’t something they have any updates to share on just yet. “[Monetisation] would be a very very big thing. It’s absolutely something that we want to explore but nothing that we have any update on for now,” said Heppe.

Seeing as the very point of Dreams seems to be to use the tools it offers to make all manner of things, being able to monetize those creations would seem like the natural next step for Media Molecules’ games- especially when you’ve got people creating things as impressive as what we’ve seen already.

Dreams is currently in early access on PS4, and it seems to be going better than Media Molecule had expected- read more on that through here.
