Sony has been on top of the world this generation both from a hardware and software perspective. Not only has the PS4 dominated, they’ve seen record sales from titles like Uncharted 4 and God of War, which also saw critical acclaim. It should probably not be too surprising then that the CEO of PlayStation says they don’t plan to mess with their formula too much.

CEO Jim Ryan did an interview with CNET where he talked about a variety of things, including the wants for their transition into the next generation, how the industry is changing and where he sees the company’s future. One part of that future that won’t change is the company’s focus on narrative-driven, cinematic inspired titles.

“We’ve never had greater success with our own narrative-driven, story-based games than we’re having right now,” Ryan said. “We feel good about that, and it’s certainly not a genre of gaming we’ll ever walk away from.

“It’s like any category of game or any category of entertainment. There are good examples and less good examples. When they’re done right, and you look at the engagement statistics for FIFA, for example, the engagement is simply unbelievable.”

With the exceptions of the likes of Bloodborne and other smaller projects, Sony’s input has progressively gotten more narrative focused, and they have largely been rewarded for it. And that’s unlikely to change with the likes of Death Stranding, done by the poster boy of cinematic gaming, being their big tentpole title this year. Love it or hate it, it’s the type of games that’s put Sony on the top of the mountain.
