A revival of the Turok franchise is something we’ve been hoping to see for well over a decade and a half, but though Saber Interactive did announce a brand-new entry in the dinosaur-slaying franchise at The Game Awards last week in the form of Turok: Originsit also surprised many with the reveal that the game will be a third-person shooter, a new direction for what has primarily been a first-person franchise in the past.

Even so, though Turok: Origins is clearly going to be a different flavour of dino-hunting experience than its predecessors with its third-person perspective and its co-op focus, according to game director Jesus Iglesias, it’s still going to be a “respectful” revival of Turok.

“If there’s one thing we know how to do at Saber, it’s how to treat games based on well-known IPs respectfully, and Turok: Origins is no exception,” he said in an interview with GamesRadar.

Iglesias went on to add that, similar to what Saber Interactive did with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 earlier this year, with Turok: Origins, the studio intends to deliver a “compelling narrative” and “great single player and co-op gameplay”.

“Space Marine 2 players have experienced the quality and production values that are standard at Saber, and they can be found in Turok: Origins as well. We hope that a compelling narrative and great single player and co-op gameplay will also appeal to players who enjoyed Space Marine 2,” he said.

Whether Turok: Origins will be as successful at what it sets out to do as Space Marine 2 clearly was remains to be seen, but the prospect of a new take on the long-dormant franchise potentially breathing new life into it is an intriguing one.

Turok: Origins is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. No release date or window has been announced.
